If you’re new here: hi! My name is Arielle, and this is my favorite spot for photos in Chicago. Looking for museum engagement photos? To see a Monet? Modern art? Or are you looking for a little bit of Europe in Chicago? Look no further than the Art Institute of Chicago. Founded in 1879, this building holds an incredible amount of architectural history beyond the incredible pieces of art it homes. I often forget I can walk through these galleries whenever I please, and it was a perfect spring day for this engagement session with Emma and Schaefer. Looking forward to their wedding day this fall!
Museum Engagement Photos: How To Prepare
Museum engagement photos often come with stipulations. If you’re not in Chicago and looking at a museum in another major city, do your research before you go. But if you’re in Chicago and choosing the AI, here’s what to expect:
- No flash photography allowed. This is typically the norm at any museum.
- No fresh flowers allowed. Be prepared to leave them outside if you do bring a bouquet.
- No permit required, but you do need to buy admission for the day.
- You have to work around the crowds. If you frequent the museum, or if you’re willing to spend a little extra money on your session, become a member. Membership gives you access one hour before the general public.
- The gardens at the Art Institute typically open with the museum and close a half hour prior, but will often close when there are high traffic events happening near by. Lollapalooza weekend, F1, etc. Check with their instagram account for closures, as well as private access on days it is closed.
These same rules apply for wedding day photos. I would advise against attempting to bring a whole wedding party inside the museum, but the South Gardens is the perfect spot for wedding party photos in Chicago.
